It was officially inaugurated by the royal decree issued on Jumada Al-Awwal 5, 1383 AH corresponding to September 23, 1963 AD, under the name of the College of Petroleum and Minerals, and in 1975 AD its academic status and name were changed to become the University of Petroleum and Minerals, and in 1986 AD the name of the university was changed to settle as it is now King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals And that is after King Fahd's visit to it, and the university is the leading institution in science and technology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and it is the first Arab university in the number of patents, as it includes two-thirds of the patents in the Arab world, and is ranked sixth at the level of universities in the world according to the classification of the United States office For patents. It was also included in the list of the top 200 universities in the world, according to the website of the British company QS, in a ranking for the year 2020-2021, and since its establishment until 2014, 30,831 people graduated from them, including 3,346 holders of a master's degree and 217 people with a doctorate. Since its inception, the university has been providing university education only to male students until the year 2019, as it allowed female students to apply for graduate studies programs for female students as a first stage and in specific specializations.
